FAQs about Siren glass sculpture

What techniques were used to create Siren?

Siren was crafted using kiln-casting and coldworking techniques to achieve its wave-like form. Sandblasting was applied across the contour of the piece to accentuate the interplay of light and shadow.

What was the process behind creating this glass sculpture?

The process of creating Siren began with a fine art plasticine prototype, which I encased in a kiln-resistant plaster mold. Once the mold set, I carefully removed the prototype and filled the hollow cavity with glass.

To achieve the internal vertical pattern, I calculated the shape and volume of two separate glass forms and treated the surfaces where they would meet. When fired together over a two-week kiln cycle, the heat fused the forms and made the ethereal, flowing shape emerge and become permanent.

What kind of glass was used in this sculpture?

Siren was created using Ohara’s eco-optical glass. The unique optical properties of this glass were essential in achieving the illusion of depth and movement within the solid form.

How long did it take to bring Siren to life?

Creating Siren took approximately three months, from the initial concept to the final polish. Each phase—designing, casting, firing, and finishing—required careful planning and attention to detail to bring the sculpture’s ethereal effect to life.
