FAQs about Meridian glass sculpture

What techniques were used to create Meridian?

Meridian was shaped using kiln-casting and sandblasting techniques. The artwork reflects an earlier phase of my career, marked by a more spontaneous and organic approach to internal forms.

What was the process behind creating this glass sculpture?

The process behind creating Meridian began with sculpting a prototype in fine art plasticine. I then made a silica-plaster mold around it and removed the original model to reveal a detailed cavity. Glass was placed into the mold in a spontaneous arrangement, allowing for unexpected interactions within the form. After kiln-casting, the sculpture was polished to bring out clarity in specific areas, then sandblasted to add texture and further define the organic internal structure.

What kind of glass was used in this sculpture?

Meridian was made using Ohara’s eco-optical glass S-BSL7, a lead- and arsenic-free material. This type of glass helped reveal the internal forms and emphasize the contrast between polished and sandblasted surfaces.

How long did it take to bring Meridian to life?

Bringing Meridian to life took about two months. The process involved multiple stages, from shaping the initial prototype to mold-making, casting, and finishing.
