FAQs about Magma glass sculpture
What techniques were used to create Magma?
Magma was shaped using glass casting and cold-working techniques. Controlled modeling before firing, combined with sandblasting effects, was intended to reveal optical illusions within the glass.
What was the process behind creating this glass sculpture?
The creation of Magma began with a hand-sculpted plasticine prototype, carefully shaped to achieve symmetry. A hard plaster-silica mold was then made, and the precise volume of glass was calculated and arranged within it. The piece was kiln-fired for two weeks, allowing the glass to melt and take shape. After firing, multiple stages of polishing refined the surface to achieve optical transparency.
What type of glass was used to create it?
This glass sculpture is made of Ohara’s eco-optical glass S-BSL7, which is free from lead and arsenic to preserve the purity of the work.
How long did it take to bring Magma to life?
The process of creating Magma took a little over two months from idea to completion. After developing the prototype, the piece underwent two weeks of kiln firing, followed by several more weeks of careful polishing.
